The Commander of Battle Group 40 of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces troops under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, Colonel Topher Magino, has implored the two warring clans of Jiddo and Garre in Quoryole district to the ceasefire and embrace reconciliation.
He said this while meeting clan leaders and the Governor of Lower Shabelle, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim Barre, in Quoryole town. “Whatever the reason for the conflict, find a way to reconcile. Your people want peace and harmony, ” implored Col Magino.
Col Magino pledged to support the district local authority to ensure normalcy prevails in the sub-region.
The Governor of Lower Shabelle, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim, called for dialogue and investigations to find the cause of the conflict. These clashes are severely affecting our people This should serve as a lesson learned and should not happen again, we must ensure peace and harmony return to the district,” he said.
For the past two months, Quoryole district, 100 km West of Mogadishu city, has been faced with violent clan conflicts between Gido and Garre clans. These conflicts have claimed over ten lives over an issue yet to be established.
Clan conflicts in Somalia are common occurrences, one factor that has derailed the country from achieving peace.
