A delegation from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces is currently in Kigali, Rwanda, for a study visit on the management and operations of military museums. The visit, which began on February 17 and concludes on February 21, 2025, aims to enhance Uganda’s efforts in establishing a National Military Museum.
The UPDF team is led by Col Nuwagira, Director Political Education Air Force, with Lt Col Joseph Maruti, National Military Museum Coordinator, and Lt Col Eng Robert Chabo as part of the delegation.
Upon arrival in Kigali, the delegation was received by Brig Gen Emmanuel Shillingi, Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Rwanda, and Lt Col Simon KABERA the Deputy Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Spokesperson.
The team’s itinerary includes visits to key historical sites such as the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, the National Heroes Museum, which houses the Mausoleum of the Late Maj Gen Fred Rwigyema, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial .
The UPDF has been actively working towards establishing a National Military Museum at Katonga Bridge, Mpigi District, a project that began in 2020.
The President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, laid the foundation stone on December 20, 2020, during the launch of the 40th Tarehe Sita Anniversary. He emphasised that the museum will offer Ugandans an opportunity to learn about the struggles and sacrifices that shaped the country’s history.
This benchmarking visit to Rwanda is expected to contribute significantly to the development of the Uganda National Military Museum, ensuring that it meets international standards in preserving and showcasing the nation’s military history.
