Ugandan peacekeepers serving under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on 12 October 2024 commemorated Uganda’s 62nd Independence anniversary in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Hosted by Uganda’s Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, Maj Gen (Rtd) Nathan Mugisha, the event was attended by dignitaries including Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, ATMIS Force Commander Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, the African Union Commission Chairperson’s Special Representative, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, and the Acting UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.
Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, praised Uganda as “a beacon of hope for regional peace” and acknowledged its crucial support to Somalia through ATMIS. He also highlighted Uganda’s longstanding role in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) since 2007, aimed at stabilising the country and fostering security for governance and development.
Lt Gen Sam Kavuma paid tribute to Ugandan troops, saying, “These gallant Ugandan men and women have demonstrated exceptional dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice.” He also honoured the fallen soldiers, calling them “true African heroes” who gave their lives for Somalia’s peace and stability.
Maj Gen (Rtd) Nathan Mugisha reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to regional cooperation, citing the African Union and the East African Community as crucial pillars for peace, security, and economic progress.
James Swan, the Acting UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, expressed his gratitude for Uganda’s role in bolstering Somalia’s security, achieved not only through military efforts but also diplomatic engagement.
The event, themed ‘A Recommitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny,’ featured vibrant cultural and artistic performances celebrating Uganda’s rich heritage.
The ceremony was also attended by several other distinguished guests, including ATMIS Deputy Force Commander for Operations and Plans, Maj Gen Marius Ngendabanka, the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Sector One Commander Brig Gen Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi, Brig Gen Joseph Ssemwanga, Brig Gen Keith Katungi, along with Ugandans living and working in Somalia.
